We are seeking a smart, savvy, and business-minded counsel to join our legal team to improve our products and process, protect against risk, and help lead the company through a time of growth. Reporting directly to our General Counsel, this role will be central in building out the legal function at Arcadia. The Associate General Counsel will be primarily responsible for oversight of our contracting process with key third parties; multi-state compliance with licensing, marketing and other obligations; developing legal process, workflow, and tracking; data and privacy issues around new products; and working with our policy team on legal and regulatory issues across all 50 states. The ideal candidate is a lawyer who thrives in an environment of change and growth, is excited about the mission of Arcadia, and is interested in corporate and consumer law. Energy experience is not required. Consistent with the size and scope of Arcadia's goals, the successful candidate will be able to both manage a diverse range of legal issues on a daily basis while remaining focused on Arcadia's overall mission and opportunities for exponential growth in one of the most important sectors of the economy. This role is based in Washington, D.C. and will work closely with the Corporate Strategy & Business Development, Product Operations, Strategic Partnerships, Brand & Communications, Marketing, Member Experience, and People teams. The role will include significant opportunities for managerial growth as the team expands and will include opportunities to work directly with the executive team, including the CEO and COO. Responsibilities ---------------- Transactional: Draft, review, edit, and negotiate contracts with a wide range of individuals, non-profits, and business organizations Compliance: Oversee compliance system, and remain compliant, with regulatory obligations across the United States Product counsel: Advise on the design, creation, and deployment of new products and features; participate as a key legal advisor and manage outside counsel on major business transactions Process building: Review, establish, and simplify legal agreements and processes; oversee tracking system for all legal agreements Leadership: Foster a workplace with the highest moral, ethical, and legal standards to deliver an environment that promotes respect, innovation, and creativity; establish the legal team as a key ingredient to business growth Requirements ------------ Must-haves: J.D. with excellent academic credentials and a state bar member in good standing (D.C. preferred) 6+ years of legal practice; combination of law firm and/or in-house highly preferred Extremely practical and business-oriented approach to one's work with strong attention to detail Superior relationship-building & influencing skills; ability to negotiate and collaboratively solve problems with external and internal stakeholders in a way that fosters trust and goodwill and advantages the company for both the short- and long-term Demonstrated excellence at assessing risk with a flexible risk tolerance; understanding that our risk-mitigation approach must change quickly as we grow & willingness to adapt accordingly Comfort working across all departments and job levels Ability to handle competing deadlines with minimal supervision Ability to advise business teams on a wide variety of matters while shifting frequently between various substantive legal areas Willingness to take feedback, learn, and grow; an ethos of continuous self-improvement Nice-to-haves: Experience providing counsel in the areas of contracts, corporate law, corporate transactions, agency law, data privacy, HR, and/or marketing Experience providing legal services to direct-to-consumer software technology companies Prior experience working in energy regulation, clean tech, or the utility space Benefits Market-based compensation (salary + equity) Healthcare, dental, vision, 401(k) and commuter benefits Paid Time Off (holidays, vacation, professional development, volunteer, parental leave) Professional development opportunities All-company lunches Free clean energy A chance to disrupt the energy sector Equal Opportunity Arcadia is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, protected veteran status, or any status protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.
