What we do at Active Travel England As the Department for Transport’s newest executive agency, Active Travel England has been set up following the government’s unprecedented commitment of £2 billion for walking, wheeling and cycling, and comes in the wake of the ambitious Gear Change strategy to transform active travel. As well as approving and inspecting schemes to enable active travel, Active Travel England will support local authorities, train staff, and spread good practice in design, implementation and public engagement. It will be a statutory consultee on major planning applications to ensure that the largest new developments properly cater for pedestrians, cyclists, and people who use wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
