Overview: Founded in 1925, ATCC is a non-profit organization with a mission to acquire, authenticate, preserve, develop, standardize, and distribute biological materials and information for the advancement and application of scientific knowledge. The Bioinformatician is responsible for assisting the Senior and/or Lead Bioinformatician with day to day management and analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data sets. This position will work closely with Scientists, IT, and external partners to maintain or improve existing bioinformatic processes and pipelines. Responsibilities: Works closely with and assists the Senior and/or Lead Bioinformatician with day to day duties. Day to day duties include but are not limited to the below duties. Runs departmental bioinformatics production scripts as required to ensure on-time processing of NGS data. Runs custom bioinformatics scripts using existing published tools, summarizes their results in a readable and accessible manner, and delivers those results in a standardized report format according to departmental procedures. Uses version control best practices to contribute code and track issues within departmental repositories. Follows departmental code style guidelines and participates in regularly scheduled code reviews to ensure code quality. Under the direction of the Senior and/or Lead Bioinformatician; writes, maintains, and improve production scripts which automate processes and analyses related to NGS, including but not limited to project data management and implementation of FAIR data practices, sequencing data processing, reference and de novo genome assembly, and data visualization. Understands and follows all other relevant corporate and departmental SOPs and procedures. Accurately completes batch records and/or appropriate internal/external documentation. Other ancillary duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education and Experience: A Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics, Genomic Sciences, Molecular Biology, or Genetics field plus 2-5 years or relevant experience OR Master’s degree 0-3 years of relevant experience. Experience in bioinformatics data analysis, data mining and processing or other related areas. Coursework or practical experience with one or more scripting languages, including but not limited to: Python, R, Perl, Ruby, Java. Coursework or practical experience with relational database design and implementation; familiarity with SQL. Coursework or practical experience with Git version control, familiarity with Github or Azure DevOps. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Proficiency using command line to interact with Windows and Linux operating systems, including but not limited to Command Prompt, Powershell, Bash, or Zsh. Ability to perform tasks that require accuracy, attention-to-detail, and technical proficiency. Advanced general computing skills. Strong understanding of next-generation sequencing (NGS). Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Skills in bioinformatics and statistical analysis. Preferred Qualification: Experience with data visualization methods, including but not limited to: RShiny, RMarkdown, or Python Jupyter Notebooks. Familiarity with NGS data or large sequencing analyses or datasets and their associated metadata. Familiarity with molecular biology. Familiarity with the ATCC Genome Portal.
